Cub Basketball Player Inspires His Team

When Collegiate School 7th Grader Robby Aboud steps onto the court this week for his first Cub basketball game of the season, he will have come a long way.
Robby suffered a severe injury in a fall and has been unable to play in any games. Instead, he worked hard at his physical therapy and supported his team in other ways.

Coach Barry Pierce says Robby was always upbeat and still came to practice on time, cheering on his teammates.

“There was no ‘Why me?’” he said. “Robby always had a positive attitude, asking what he could do to help the team.”

Robby kept busy keeping the scorebook during games, but he has been itching to get back on the court. He has been cleared to play on Jan. 31, and his teammates are excited for him to be back. The team is 3-2 with five games remaining for the season. Coach Pierce imagines the reaction when Robby, a shooting forward, scores his first basket.

“It will be magical,” he said. “I will call timeout and tell him, ‘Think about everything you’ve been through. There’s nothing you can’t do.'”

Robby’s handling of his recovery is a testament to his maturity and poise, says Coach Pierce, and an example of what a Collegiate athlete should be.

“In my mind, he is the walking embodiment of Collegiate’s mission,” he said. “He is a inspiration to our team.”
