Sustainability and Service

A group of Lower Schoolers and Middle Schoolers spent a morning collaborating on a service project while simultaneously learning from our campus grounds staff.
Two classes of kindergartners and one class of 5th Graders joined forces with Physical Plant staffers Allison Moyer, Robyn Hartley and Bryant Logan to learn how they strategically plan and maintain our beautiful campus.

According to Middle School Humanities teacher Charlie Williams, Ms. Moyer, Ms. Hartley and Mr. Logan "are each wonderful teachers who communicated both their knowledge of and passion for understanding and protecting our environment in a way that impacted students and adults in attendance."

After the educational component of the program, which focused on the impact of runoff in the James River watershed, the students worked in small groups to clean filterras, which are systems for collecting and filtering runoff water before it drains into creeks and rivers.

"The students left this activity with a greater knowledge of the environmental impact of runoff, a little dirt on their clothes, and a newfound appreciation for the positive impact they can have on the environment," Mr. Williams said
