Collegiate Honors Emma Harrison for Excellence

The 2022 Lower School Craigie Endowment for Teaching Excellence Award is presented to Emma Harrison.
Established in 1996 by the family of Beese Craigie, a former 4th Grade teacher and Board Chair at Collegiate, this fund rewards a Lower School teacher who exemplifies the values and ideals of teaching at Collegiate.

The following remarks were made by Head of Lower School Debbie Miller at the Opening of School Meeting, held August 2022.

This year’s recipient is an amazingly calm and happy teacher, who exemplifies these
characteristics with love and joy every day in her classroom. When you walk into her
classroom, you immediately sense her students truly enjoy being with her! Her goals are
consistently student-centered, as she desires to grow and adapt her classroom environment to provide the most benefit for her students. This teacher works to plan specific instruction that not only meets the needs of her students as they learn and grow, but makes their learning engaging and important to them.

While providing a nurturing, well-ordered learning environment, this year’s recipient
understands that children thrive when they feel loved, heard and supported. In working with her students, she seeks to acknowledge their thinking, find what motivates them and, when the situation arises, determine what the true problems are behind certain student behaviors. She provides strong and clear scaffolding to her students so that they can reach their potential.

Students know she is on their side, loving and fair, as they practice making good decisions and as they make academic gains well beyond what might be expected of them. Being in her class brings happiness and excitement to the students and provides opportunities for them to grow respect and appreciation for each other.

This year’s recipient is a true team player. She is a colleague who is committed to mentoring others and is consistent in how she comes alongside new colleagues. She has a desire to grow personally and professionally and seeks out leadership roles in the Lower School. She has served as team leader, curriculum team member and is known for her positive way of problem-solving for solutions! Our award winner lives out the values of community, love of learning and excellence at Collegiate. Please join me in congratulating Emma Harrison, the winner of the 2022 Craigie Endowment for Teaching Excellence.
