Wellness

Collegiate fosters the health and wellness of students, faculty and staff. Our School Wellness committees consist of faculty, administrators, nurses, athletic directors, counselors and parents who routinely collaborate to support positive health practices. This integration of efforts and resources results in curriculum, programs and services that work in sync to enhance the emotional and physical health and well-being of each member of the Collegiate community.

Our Role Model

Collegiate School is proud to model its SWC and wellness program after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model. This collaborative approach to learning and health provides a road map for our School to foster and promote health and wellness among students, faculty, staff and families.

Developed in conjunction with experts in the fields of health, public health, education and school health, WSCC teaches children early on to establish healthy behaviors. The chart seen here provides a summary of the WSCC’s 10 components of a coordinated school health program, which the CDC and its partners, based on the tenants of a whole child approach to education.

Wellness Spotlight

Link it & Live it

The Collegiate Link It & Live It Wellness Program inspires and empowers the school community to make healthful choices. There is a focus on the link between sleep, healthful eating and physical activity, and how they each impact our hearts, brains and bodies.

Link It & Live It provides opportunities for our school community to take ownership for present and future wellness. The teams are responsible for evaluating the current health and wellness practices of the Collegiate community, creating a plan, developing and implementing new policies, and promoting school wellness.

The CDC suggests, "Prevention should be woven into all aspects of our lives, including where and how we live, learn, work and play." To increase the positive development of our students, our wellness program connects the prevention of drug abuse with a focus on good health and wellness. We utilize the social norms approach in our prevention program.

School Counseling

Upper School counselors provide a listening ear and offer support for students' personal concerns that impact their emotional and mental health such as stress revolving around academic and nonacademic-related pressures, peer relationships, family, substance use and abuse, disordered eating, self-image, transition, grief and any issue that interferes with the students daily functioning.

As Middle School students grow in curiosity and independence in the midst of an ever-changing world they ask, “What’s important to me?” “How can I best handle that situation?” Middle School counselors help address these questions by supporting students on a wide range of issues: making and keeping friends, using social media, handling family changes, managing stress and pressure, coping with grief and loss, and juggling the demands of school life.

Lower School counselors meet with each class each month to teach about and discuss Collegiate School’s 5 core values: Respect, Honor, Excellence, Love of Learning and Community. Individual and small-group counseling sessions focus on managing social and emotional growth and development in a healthy way so that learning can occur in an uninhibited manner.

In each division, our counselors work with faculty, staff and parents to have in place a community of caring adults available to meet the changing needs of our students no matter the age.
