Expeditions and Ecology Backpacking Trip to False Cape State Park

Collegiate Upper School students from the Expeditions science and history class (co-taught by Stew Williamson, Dan Bartels and Courtney Schweickart) and from Ecology class (taught by Sandra Marr) spent two days in Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park in Virginia Beach in mid-November.
Along with camping gear and food, the group carried telescopes to watch the rare transit of Mercury (the next one for Richmond is in 2049) and to learn about the biodiversity of beach and bay habitats. “Hiking over seven miles on the beach was a different kind of physical and mental challenge that our students embraced,” Mrs. Marr said.
