Fourth Grade Service Learning Project Concludes Immigration Unit
As a culminating event to their immigration unit, for three weeks in November Collegiate 4th Graders participated in a service learning project that allowed them to spend time with and get to know local immigrant and refugee children.
The 4th Graders planned activities for K-5th Grade English as a Second Language students who participate in a weekly ESL program at a local church. Then, several students from each of Collegiate’s 4th Grade classes traveled on Tuesday nights to share experiences with the ESL students, helping with homework, reading together and playing games.
According to 4th Grade teacher Sonya Smith, this activity was a tangible way for the students to expand their knowledge on an important topic, as well as put learning into action and help meet a community need.
