Calculators Enhance 7th Graders' Understanding of Cardiovascular Systems

While attending the National Science Teaching Association Conference, Collegiate 7th Grade science teacher Laura Zyglocke connected with representatives from Texas Instruments who, through a company program, loaned her and fellow teacher Jennifer Brost a set of TI-nSpire CX II graphing calculators. In addition, the set came with innovator hubs and materials for students to build and code Play-Doh hearts that show blood flow through the heart, demonstrate change in heart rate due to temperature fluctuations and restart a heart that has gone into ventricular fibrillation using AED paddles.
“Our cardiovascular system unit has been greatly enhanced by these activities as our students have learned more about the physiology of the heart as well as electrical circuits and computer coding,” Mrs. Zyglocke said.
