Collegiate Boys Attend Lessons and Carols

The annual Lessons and Carols service for boys in 5th through 12th Grades, a Collegiate School tradition for more than 40 years, took place this morning.
Dating back to 11th-century England, the Service of Lessons and Carols was revived in the early 20th century to celebrate the end of World War I as well as the holiday season. At Collegiate, former Middle School teacher David Martin introduced the service of readings and songs in 1973.

This year's service, held at Second Baptist Church, began with bells ringing and 5th Graders singing. Boys from each grade level, 6th-12th, read a lesson followed by Upper School science teacher Dave Privasky and Head of School Penny Evins. Between the readings, the student choristers and the congregation sang traditional carols.

Just down the road, while boys gathered for the Lessons and Carols service, 5th-12th Grade girls rehearsed for Pageant, their annual Christmas play. Pageant performances will be Monday, Dec. 9 and Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church on River Road. All are welcome!
