Two Standout Goalies Emerge in Cub Field Hockey

In Collegiate School Cub Sports field hockey, it is unusual to have one talented goalie in the 7th Grade. But to have two players solid in goal? That is practically unheard of.
With the team’s former goalie, an 8th Grader, playing on the JV Gold squad this season, Cub Green and Cub Gold coaches might have worried about who was going to fill the goalie void in 2019.

All fears were quickly laid to rest during pre-season open gym days when 7th Graders Harper Murphy and Grace Moerner turned up ready to block, dive, kick, charge and do whatever else a goalie must do to keep the ball out of the goal.

“Harper and Grace are athletic, talented and fearless,” said their coach Sian Bryon.

The girls’ field hockey skills were first noticed when they played with Tallyho, one of 10 youth sports programs offered through Cougar Sports Zone, which is owned and operated by Collegiate.

Since then, Harper and Grace have worked with Jenny Lindner, Collegiate’s varsity field hockey goalie coach, over the summer and during every week of the season. They divide their playing time between Cub Green and Cub Gold, and have impressed their coaches with their enthusiasm and commitment.

“Harper and Grace are dedicated to improving with every practice and every game,” said Coach Bryon. “We are excited to see what the future will bring for these two talented and enthusiastic young athletes.”
