Collegiate Educators Explore Global Issues at the U.S.-Mexican Border

This past summer, Middle School English teacher Wendi Moss and Powell Institute for Responsible Citizenship Director of Global Education and Inclusion Erica Coffey joined educators from across the United States for a deep dive into Mexico-United States border relations and the specifics of U.S. immigration practices.
“I walked away with more questions than I began with, and could not have been more pleased,” Ms. Coffey said. “The one piece I know for sure is that it is more complicated than I had imagined.”

Ms. Coffey plans to integrate what she learned into the Senior Capstone curriculum for her International Emerging Leaders: Americas course.

With the new-found exposure to numerous and varied perspectives on this complex global issue, Dr. Moss is creating a cross-curricular immigration unit that includes reading contemporary novels centered around the migrant experience and to coincide with 8th Grade students studying the history of immigration.

Additionally, Dr. Moss presented her experience to the faculty as part of a “Collegiate Learns Together” faculty education session, “Using Images to Inform Narrative.” Using border pictures from various news sources, artists and her own personal collection, she asked teachers to consider presenting current events in visual ways to engage students to think critically about authentic issues.
