Collegiate 9th Graders Launch Safe Driving Campaign

For the past month, two Collegiate School driver’s education classes have embarked on an initiative to educate the community on the dangers of distracted driving.
The classes of 9th Graders broke into seven groups and used the process of Design Thinking to gather information about distracted driving through interviews, observations and research. They then collaborated on ways in which they could most effectively share the information with parents, students, teachers, coaches, administrators and on-campus visitors. The results include posters, carpool signs, a video and social media posts. Some of the messaging includes:
  • The average text takes 4.6 seconds. A car crash takes less than 1 second.
  • Texting takes your eyes off the road for 4.6 seconds, A car crash takes less than 1 second.
  • Distracted driving is dangerous. Put down your phone!
  • 64% of all accidents have a phone involved. Once glance at your phone isn’t worth it.
“We hope that the campaign makes people reflect and maybe change some of their habits,” said 9th Grader Lucy Storey.

Upper School health and wellness teacher Jake McDonald said he was very impressed with the students’ work and remarked that the launch of the project was well-timed.

“The role of technology in our lives will not lessen any time soon,” he said. “This is a real-life problem for all of us, but we believe by making others aware and preaching the value of present-moment awareness, it is controllable.”
