Professional Development Session Informs Faculty About Brain Science

The entire Collegiate School JK-12th Grade faculty — roughly 250 members in total — gathered today in the Seal Athletic Center for Mind, Brain and Education Science, a professional development workshop facilitated by the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning (CTTL).
The session was led by Glenn Whitman and Ian Kelleher, authors of Neuroteach: Brain Science and the Future of Education, which was required summer reading for all Collegiate faculty.

Mr. Whitman is the Director of the CTTL at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, Maryland, where he also serves as Dean of Studies for preschool-12th Grade. Mr. Kelleher is the Head of Research for the CTTL, where he focuses on the development of projects that measure the effectiveness of research-informed strategies used by St. Andrew’s teachers and students.

The mission of the CTTL is to create and innovate in the field of mind, brain and education science research to help teachers maximize their effectiveness and students achieve their highest potential. The CTTL is the only pre-collegiate, school-based research center in the U.S. that designs and delivers research-informed professional development programming on mind, brain and education science. In its six-year history, through workshops and conference presentations, the CTTL has worked with more than 9,000 teachers and school leaders.

“It is our goal that 100 percent of our teachers will be trained in the foundational mindsets of mind, brain and education science and will apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the workshops to the classrooms,” saud Susan Droke, Collegiate’s Chief Academic Officer, who organized the session.

Mr. Whitman and Mr. Kelleher will work with Collegiate throughout the 2018-19 school year, providing three days of on-campus professional development for the faculty. (They will return in November and February.)
