Collegiate Holiday Celebrations Conclude

Wearing their traditional red and white capes, members of the Collegiate School Kindergarten class wrapped up the holiday season this morning with the annual Kindergarten Chapel, held at River Road Presbyterian Church.
With family and friends in attendance, the young Cougars recited verse and sang songs depicting the Christmas story. They filed out of the church enthusiastically ringing the bells of Christmas.

Earlier this month, other Lower, Middle and Upper School students held their annual holiday performances.

The Collegiate 3rd Grade presented the annual Concert of Carols for their families at River Road Presbyterian Church on Dec. 8. During the performance, student soloists and an angel choir sang contemporary songs and carols. Through the music, the students acted out the Christmas story by portraying angels, camels, a donkey, a star, kings, shepherds, Mary, Joseph and the innkeeper.

Collegiate 5th through 12th Grade girls performed the Christmas Pageant at All Saints Episcopal Church on Dec. 4 and 5. Held since the early days of the Collegiate School for Girls on Monument Avenue, Pageant tells the Christmas story as the Upper School girls' Glee Club and Middle School Balcony Chorus sing and students costumed as cherubs, angels, shepherds, kings and Mary and Joseph re-enact the birth of Jesus. On the Friday before the performances, Collegiate alumnae gathered for the annual Pageant Luncheon, held in the Craigie Board Room in the Sharp Academic Commons. Afterward, many of them visited All Saints to watch the Pageant dress rehearsal.

The annual Lessons and Carols service for 5th through 12th Grade boys took place on Dec. 1 at 2nd Baptist Church. A Collegiate School tradition for more than 40 years, this year’s service featured bells ringing, 5th Graders singing and 6th through12th Grade boys each reading a lesson. Collegiate coach and Senior Director, Annual and Leadership Giving Shep Lewis and Head of School Steve Hickman also offered a lesson. Between readings, student choristers and the congregation sang traditional carols.

Feast of Juul, where Collegiate senior boys gather with their teachers for dinner, songs, roasts and toasts, and Brunch, the musical extravaganza that junior girls perform in honor of senior girls (with 5th-10th Grade girls in attendance), launched the holiday season on Nov. 21 and 22, respectively.
