Homecoming Pep Rally Will Ramp Up Cougar Spirit

No event revs up Cougar pride quite like the annual Homecoming Pep Rally when the entire Collegiate student body, faculty and staff convene to cheer and cheer some more.
Tomorrow, JK-12th Grade students — covered in green and gold face paint, costumes, crazy hats and wigs — will fill the bleachers in Seal Athletic Center to get pumped up for Saturday’s big Homecoming game against Norfolk Academy on Grover Jones Field at 1 p.m.

The festivities will include watching varsity cross country, volleyball, tennis, field hockey and soccer teams perform silly dances. Then the entire student body will participate in a cheer competition with the loudest division being declared the winner.

The Homecoming Court will be introduced: Ellie Angle, Lauren Brizzolara, Kate Ferrell, Caroline Hall, Wescott Lowe, Harper Zaun, T. Brewer, Evan Clark, David Hugo, Spencer Lyons, Travis Reifsnider and Joseph White. The court will compete in a series of wacky relay races and then the Homecoming King will be crowned. The Homecoming Queen will be announced at halftime of the game on Saturday.

SCA Vice Co-Chairs Annie Mahoney and Zaed Karabatek will lead the Pep Rally festivities and share what it takes to put the event together.

Zaed
“Traditionally, the vice co-chairs run Pep Rally. We had our first meeting at the beginning of the school year and we started writing a script.”

Annie
“We saw what last year’s co-chairs talked about and we based our script off of that. And then we contacted captains of sports teams about what they were doing because we needed their plans. And then we figured out what we wanted to wear.”

Zaed
“Coach Beth Kondorossy really helped us out with decisions we were thinking about. When we were indecisive, she always had a suggestion and that really helped out.”

Annie
“This year’s Pep Rally will be pretty classic. We have a couple of new relay events that we’re excited about.”

Zaed
“We feel like we’re going after a more vintage, classic Collegiate vibe, a throwback type of Pep Rally. It’s a nice change from the past couple of years. We’re just going to add our individual spice to it.”

Annie
“Coach Kondo has a lot of vintage, cool Collegiate stuff for us to wear. I think we’re going to get some cool old jerseys. We still have to pick out specifically what we want.”

Zaed
“Annie and I are big fans of public speaking. I love being in front of people. We are both really super excited to see how everything goes. I’m excited and I also have a lot of nervous energy. Both of us have talked in front of Upper School before, but this is in front of the whole school and faculty and administration. Everyone is there. It does scare me a little, but I’m happy about it.”

Annie
“I have little brothers in the Lower School and when I told them that I was going to be the person hosting the Pep Rally, they were like, ‘What? You’re that person?’ It’s more than just talking to the Upper School because Lower Schoolers look forward to this so much and they go all out. We want to make it good for them. That’s an added bonus.”

Zaed
“Also, it sets up a good first impression, especially with the Middle School and younger kids. I feel like whenever Annie and I will go up and see one of them they will be like, ‘Those are the people who ran Pep Rally.’ And this is one of those times when you’re allowed to scream as loud as you can.”
