Annual Cougar Classic Delivers Thrills

Two teams of faculty and staff met on the court of the newly renovated Seal Athletic Center last night in the Cougar Classic, Collegiate School’s annual contest of basketball skill and staying power.
The game, organized by the Parents’ Association, featured 26 players from all three school divisions, various departments within the school such as Activity Quest or the physical plant, and administration. After a quick pre-game warmup session, the ballers hit the court and entertained the crowd of students and their families who cheered from the bleachers. The green jersey team earned the win with an intense double overtime 44-42 victory.

Middle School humanities teacher Charlie Williams earned MVP honors after tying the game with two seconds left to head to the first overtime. He then sealed the victory with the game-winning layup in the second extra period.

“The team is the MVP,” he said after the game. “There are five of us on the court at a time.”

This Cougar Classic marks the end of an era as Shep Lewis, Collegiate’s Associate Director of Development and soccer coach, passes the torch to Jake McDonald, Associate Director of Summer Quest. Mr. Lewis knows that he leaves the event in good hands because of all the support from the Parents’ Association and Collegiate staff.

"We've had amazing coordinators and volunteers every year and they make it all go so smoothly,” he said. “Mark Chambers and Chris Williams [Collegiate’s Field and Equipment Coordinators] also deserve recognition for setting up the gyms, gathering uniforms among other things. Everything is always organized and they spend a lot of time getting things ready."
