Collegiate Hosts Community Drug Prevention Discussion
Collegiate School welcomed 10 representatives from area schools and organizations today for a community discussion about substance abuse prevention and early intervention.
Last fall, Vanessa Fletcher, Student Assistance Specialist at Caron Treatment Centers, started the group discussions so that attendees could share insights and information. A third meeting is planned for the spring.
Two Collegiate faculty members, Mike Boyd and Annie Richards, presented about two of the School’s prevention and intervention programs: Teens Expressing Alternative Choices (TEACH) and the Faculty Health Team (FHT). Mr. Boyd, Collegiate’s Director of Performing Arts, serves as leader of the School’s FHT, which engages students and faculty in conversations about drug and alcohol use in the Collegiate community. Ms. Richards, the Upper School Wellness Chair, sponsors TEACH, an Upper School club that focuses on a student’s commitment to abstain from alcohol and other drugs without judging the choices or behaviors of others.
The attendees, who included school administrators and counselors, as well as intervention coordinators and members of local agencies, then participated in a candid conversation and exchanged best practices and new prevention innovations in a roundtable discussion.
“It is important that the Richmond community comes together to share ideas and brainstorm on ways that we can work together to create healthier environments for our youth,” said Kathy Wrenn, Collegiate’s Wellness Coordinator, who helped coordinate the event.
