Juniors Participate in Annual Application Workshop

A group of 12 college deans and directors of admission from across the country met today with Collegiate School juniors for an annual workshop to provide insight into the college search and application process.
A hallmark of the College Counseling Office’s programming, the all-day program, which featured representatives from Bates College, Elon University, Virginia Tech, Davidson College, Miami University, University of Virginia, Washington & Lee University and University of California-Berkeley, gave students an insider’s look into the college admission process.

During the program, juniors broke into admission committees, each chaired by an actual dean, director or associate director of admission, to decide from a set of four mock applications which candidates to admit or deny.

“The chance for our students to take such a deep dive into how admission decisions are made, not only from the perspective of the real decision-makers, but also as full participants with them, is truly special,” said Brian Leipheimer, Collegiate’s Director of College Counseling.

Other highlights of the event included large and small group Q&A sessions with the admission officers and an exercise on writing application essays.

This evening in the Sharp Academic Commons, the visitors will serve on a panel and speak to parents of freshmen, sophomores and juniors.

"The collective firepower reflected by the admission reps is astonishing," Mr. Leipheimer said. "We're extremely lucky to have them share their wisdom and expertise with our juniors and our parents."
