Last fall, Collegiate School 8th Grader Alfred Stratford lacerated his spleen in a Cub Green football game. He was knocked out of the game — and out of competition — until he was cleared to play Cub basketball in early December.
Coming back from the injury proved quite a challenge, given that Alfred had lost 20 pounds and all of his stamina. He hit the weight room and ran sprints. Initially, games and practices sapped his energy, but slowly his endurance improved.
“At this point in the season, I am back to full strength,” he said. “It feels great to be back and playing.”
Collegiate offers 7th and 8th Graders the opportunity to play Cub Sports, a spirited part of Collegiate’s commitment to promoting school community and culture. At this level, there are no cuts, which means all team members are given a chance to play in each game.
Coach Rob Wedge and members of his Cub basketball team welcomed Alfred’s return to competition. The squad’s go-to man, Alfred averages 10 points per game and is the top rebounder. Coach Wedge credits Alfred’s contributions and leadership for the team’s current 5-1 record.
“Alfred is working hard and leading his team in practices and during games by doing little things well and organizing the guys in a productive and thoughtful way,” Coach Wedge said.
Alfred has other thoughts about his team’s success.
“Coach Wedge is the main reason behind this,” he said. “He pushes us and works with us on our weaknesses to make us better.”
