Free Heart Screenings for Collegiate Students

Collegiate School is co-sponsoring a day of free heart screenings for Richmond-area youths and young adults next month, and all students ages 12 and older are encouraged to register.

The screenings are open to individuals up to age 26, and athletes in particular are invited to take advantage of the no-cost evaluation, which will allow participants to be screened for heart conditions that might otherwise go undetected.
"As coaches, our utmost responsibility is the care of our student athletes," says Will O'Brien, Collegiate's Associate Athletic Director and Sports Performance Coach. "This screening is a way to provide an extra layer of protection."

The event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 18 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the University of Richmond’s Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness (23 Boatwright Drive, Room 23B). While there is no cost, registration is required, and can be completed by clicking here.

This is the second annual free heart screening hosted in Central Virginia by the Ryan Lopynski Big Heart Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Northern Virginia that strives to prevent Sudden Cardiac Arrest in young adults.
EKG screenings can identify a heart problem that might otherwise go undetected, and the organization was founded by a couple who lost their son in this manner.

During last year's event, 250 local youths and young adults were screened, and the examinations uncovered 29 abnormal results that led to recommendations for follow up, said Jeremy Lopynski, co-founder of the Big Heart Foundation.

"All follow up is optional by the students (and) parents, as we keep all information confidential and administer these screenings for the benefit of the children," Mrs. Lopynski says.

In addition to Collegiate, community partners for this year's February screening include the Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation, WRIC-TV 8 and the University of Richmond. To learn more about the screening or to register, visit heartscreenings.org.
