Collegiate’s junior varsity cross country team ended the 2016 fall season with a strong finish.
And while the team’s results yielded great success, head coach Rives Fleming says this year, the team wanted to focus more on self-improvement than its overall win-loss record.
“Cross country is not easy or glamorous,” he said. “It involves putting a lot of time and miles in to build a base and get better. It was fun to watch the results of good old-fashioned hard work.”
During the season, three student-athletes ran a 2.25-mile course and then ran the same course three weeks later, shaving two minutes off their time.
“The kids had a genuine great feeling about that,” Mr. Fleming said. “The clock does not lie! And they rightfully felt very proud of it.”
Additionally, from the team’s first race in September to one at the end of October, the average team improvement was more than four minutes.
“That's pretty outrageous as a team,” said Mr. Fleming. “We always see great improvements in our runners, but this year's group as a whole made a tremendous leap.”
