Collegiate School 1st Graders put a creative spin on a classic tale as they performed “Make Way for Ducklings RVA Style” in front of parents and friends in their annual fall play this morning in Estes Building.
The 1st Graders, taught by Kathryn Oden and Mironda Starke, were decked out in costumes depicting mother and father ducks, ducklings, baseball players, artists and Krispy Kreme employees. One student served as a pianist as well as a duckling, and another student served as an assistant on the production. (Two classes put on this play. In the spring, three other 1st Grade classes will stage another work.)
The story followed the ducks as they tried to find a safe place to raise their family. They visited various areas in Richmond and met residents. Baseball players at the Diamond, artists at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and employees at Krispy Kreme sang about the virtues of their locations. While all had their pluses, the ducks decided to move on to find the perfect spot. They finally settled in Maymont Park and their ducklings burst from the nest happy and healthy.
The play concluded with the entire cast singing “Home” and “RVA All Day” and the actors taking their bows to thunderous applause.
