Collegiate Seniors Enjoy Final Day

Collegiate seniors attended their final Upper School assembly today and wrapped up their afternoon sharing pizza and hugs with their kindergartners.
The four Class of 2016 members who serve as Student Council Association leaders gave reflections during the assembly about their journeys through Collegiate, and also shared gratitude and words of wisdom.

Clay Bowden thanked Collegiate faculty and staff and her classmates and friends for making her 17 million minutes (K-12th Grade) at Collegiate memorable and remarkable."Our Lower School adventures shaped us into the unique individuals we are today."

Mait Inness reflected on life as a Collegiate Middle Schooler, and how the four years spent in 5th through 8th Grade helped transform him and his classmates into self-assured, curious and disciplined Upper Schoolers who could excel and make a difference for others.

Catherine DeVoe reassured her classmates that while they might forget the uplifting words she shared in today's assembly, what would, and should, endure is "who we've become these past four years" and what the Collegiate experience will enable them to become in the future.

Jack Reifsnider encouraged 9th through 11th Graders to treasure their Upper School years, and also thanked the teachers for caring. "You are the people that made this place special."

J.P. Watson, Interim Head of the Upper School, encouraged seniors to treat all encounters as valuable.

"As you go out into the larger community, I encourage you to seek out opportunities to be a part of someone else's story," said Mr. Watson, who will transition to Assistant Head of School on July 1. "It's your time to launch forward into an exciting new chapter of your individual story. We wish you well."

Mr. Watson also recognized retiring English teacher Cindy Douglass and retiring Vice President of Advancement Amanda Surgner, who also serves as an Upper School advisor.

As Mrs. Douglass and Mrs. Surgner were escorted from Oates Theater by two juniors, Collegiate kindergartners - members of the Class of 2028 - serenaded their seniors with "I Am a Promise." The seniors responded by leading "Hail, Collegiate" before departing from Oates with their kindergarten friends to share some special time together over pizza and conversation.

As is tradition on the final day of class for seniors, they wrapped up their afternoon by picking up and poring over their yearbooks. They will spend the next two weeks immersed in their individual senior projects before returning for graduation on June 10.
