Racing Around the World Virtually Encourages Fitness for 1st Graders
The Collegiate 1st Grade is beginning a new adventure using Virtual World Race (VWR), an online contest to virtually race around the world – a total of 25,000 miles! This morning the students heard from Upper School athletes Gwin Sinnott and Travis Reifsnider and met with Sean Carithers from Virtual World Race to learn about the importance of exercise and how the race works.
This program connects to our school wellness initiative with a focus on healthy lifestyles and fitness, as well as global learning. Additionally, teachers have the option to use the Virtual World Race to complement their instruction for reading, English, math and science. "We are tying this into our mapping unit that we began in September and revisit throughout the year," says 1st Grade teacher Sarah Williamson. "We will have a large map in our 1st Grade hallway to track where we are traveling."
Between now and mid-April, 1st Grade students, faculty, and parents will be encouraged to log their daily activity and chart their progress with a collective goal of traveling the circumference of the world. Miles will be added as teams (1st Grade classes) complete assorted activities (cycling, walking, running, swimming, and a wide range of other team and individual sports and activities). More time equals more miles. Each team’s progress will be tracked, and highlighted milestone destinations around the globe will be recorded online. The goal is for each participant to log at least 100 miles of exercise between Jan. 12 – April 12, 2016. Let the race begin!
