I am Allison Williams, the head librarian in the Lower School. Many of your children met me and visited our wonderful library if they attended Getting Ready for Kindergarten or Getting Ready for JK this summer. We like to think the Watt Library is the heart of the school, as well as an extension of what goes on in your child’s classroom. I share stories and songs with Kindergarten classes as part of their regular schedule. My colleague Kate Featherston will do the same with our Junior Kindergartners. We, along with the teachers, also plan for enrichment activities and research. Each student at Collegiate has his or her own library card, and soon after school opens, your child will begin to check out library books to take home. Caring for the books and returning them on time are part of a student’s responsibility. To help in this task, each child has a Paw Pouch in which to keep his or her books.
I know that Collegiate families are reading families, and I encourage you to share this pleasure throughout the year. Here is a list of notable picture books suggested by Publishers Weekly:
• We Don't Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins
• The Little Red Cat Who Ran Away and Learned His ABCs (the Hard Way) by Patrick McDonnell
• Mama Lion Wins the Race by Jon J Muth • After the Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again by Dan Santat • Hello Hello by Brendan Wenzel
Mrs. Featherston and I look forward to meeting you on Parents’ Night, when the Watt Library hosts a Book Sale of new books for our collection. Until then, enjoy your summer reading time with your child!
