Varsity Boys’ Soccer Team Retains Tucker-Pitt Cup

On Friday, Sept. 23, Collegiate’s Varsity Boys’ Soccer team defeated Norfolk Academy, 2-1 in the Tucker-Pitt Cup, named in honor of John H. Tucker, Jr. and Malcolm U. Pitt, Jr. The victory marks the third straight Cup win for the Cougars.

Below is a description of the Tucker-Pitt Cup sent by Charlie Blair, Collegiate’s Varsity Boys’ head coach, and written by Sean Wetmore, former coach of the Norfolk Academy Bulldogs, who worked for both Mr. Tucker and Mr. Pitt.

As many of you know, Mr. Tucker served as Headmaster at Norfolk Academy from 1978 until he retired in 2000. Mr. Pitt (known by many of us simply as "Buck") served as the headmaster of Collegiate from 1960-87 and worked at and led Camp Virginia for 81 consecutive summers. Buck passed away on Nov. 4, 2008, after living a truly memorable and important life.

The soccer game between Collegiate and Norfolk Academy is always an important event to us not only because it typically represents two of the finest teams in the state, but because the boys who play in these games play the game with heart, determination and the truest sense of fair play. Teams from Norfolk Academy and Collegiate have won five state championships (three for Collegiate and two for Norfolk Academy) and have represented the Virginia Prep League in the final 11 times. It is for all these reasons that we should play this game each year to honor Mr. Tucker and Mr. Pitt.

Congratulations to both schools and their great traditions of soccer and head of school leadership!
