In Richmond for the Junior League's Book & Author Dinner last night, Elizabeth Berg made time yesterday to come to Collegiate and talk with some of our Upper School students.
Ms. Berg is the author of several successful novels including Open House, which was an Oprah's Book Club selection, Durable Goods and, just out, The Dream Lover, about French novelist George Sand. In her talk with our students, she described the heartbreak of having a poem rejected at an early age -- 25 years later she won an essay contest in Parents magazine and she has been writing since then. She talked about her 10-year career as a nurse and how that proved to be a time of growth in understanding of people and their relationships, hopes and fears. And she demonstrated to the students that the path to success is not necessarily a linear one -- in addition to nursing, she also waitressed and sang in a rock band along the way.
Many thanks to former English teacher Lewis Lawson who made the arrangements for Ms. Berg's visit.
