Cub Wrestling 2003-2004: Match Synopsis Vs. Norfolk Collegiate If sports writers needed a title for our competition last night against Norfolk Collegiate, they might have deemed it, “The Match That Wouldn’t End.” Hats off to two groups in particular: six of our wrestlers who would not learn until nearly two and a half hours into the match that they would not have the opportunity to compete in a second individual match, and their parents/spectators who endured the wait for that second round only to be disappointed. Please know that the plan was to have all wrestlers compete in two individual matches, but mat and time constraints worked against us. We had the use of only one mat, as the varsity needed practice space, and Norfolk Collegiate needed to depart at a sane hour to embark on their two-hour ride home. Once we began to approach 7pm, the opposing coaches understandably had to make the call to end the match a bit prematurely. Coaches Lawson and Leipheimer want to thank all of the wrestlers and their parents for their patience during this lengthy match, especially since we know folks had other things, like studies, to which they needed to attend. Overall, we are extremely pleased with our convincing victory over Norfolk Collegiate. We practiced hard with the intention of evening the score with this talented team, and we knew that we would need gutsy performances from all of our boys to achieve that goal. Whether it was working for an extra takedown to move the margin of victory from a minor to major decision, working for a pin instead of winning by points, fighting in the last seconds to preserve the minor decision, or battling from their backs to avoid a pin, the extra efforts by our boys really made the difference in the match. There is a refusal to give up in these young men, even when the eventual result is a loss, which is truly special to watch. As a team, we did a nice job recognizing and defending against Norfolk Collegiate’s headlock-happy tendencies, but we still struggled with defending against rolls—we’ll pay close attention to this again today in practice as we prepare for our final match against St. Christopher’s tomorrow.
