Sixth Grader Luke Tyson came up with the idea for the project, which is called SEW for SOS, in March. He invited his classmates and other Middle School students to join him in the library during lunchtime to write encouraging notes and sew them inside small pillows. About 20-30 5th through 7th Graders have gathered each school day to participate, with Middle School librarian Carolyn LaMontagne providing the sewing machines and guidance on basic stitching.
The pillows have been donated to children and adults dealing with illness, grief, or other challenging issues as a way to lift their spirits, and the group is soliciting requests via a website that Luke partnered with 6th Grader Deven Pandya to create - www.sewforsos.org.
