Welcome, Global Educators!
Collegiate is honored to host the Global Education Benchmark Group's second annual conference in The Sharp Academic Commons today and tomorrow.
Approximately 160 independent school educators and administrators from across the nation and around the world have gathered here to share ideas and best practices for shaping students into engaged and productive global citizens. Collegiate is a founding member of the Global Education Benchmark Group, which was established in 2008 by 20 independent schools, and our Director of Global Education, Clare Sisisky, is on its board.
Conference attendees convened this morning in our Estes Student Center to hear from keynote speaker Rick Wagoner, businessman and brother of Collegiate board member Judy Pahren. He discussed the importance of preparing students for work and life in a globalized world and shared some of his experiences living abroad in a corporate context. As a former trustee at Duke University, he was involved in the implementation of their signature program "DukeEngage," which offers immersion programs and opportunities for independent study.
Following Mr. Wagoner's address, the group split into sessions on topics ranging from the risks of study abroad programming that independent schools should consider to creating partnerships in the developing world. Ms. Sisisky and Collegiate's Director of Economics Education, Cathy Melton, presented to one group on the topic of our annual International Emerging Leaders Conference. After lunch and tomorrow morning there will be additional break-out sessions, and the keynote speaker in the morning will be Richmond attorney and author Qasim Rashid who will discuss "Making Sense of Islam at Home and Abroad: The Role of Global Educators."
