Seniors Learn on the Job
Today concludes the first week of three spent by the Class of 2013 at their Senior Projects. Every student is spending their final days as Cougars as an intern, volunteer, traveler or creating an original work, from banking to fly fishing to filmmaking.
Some students are traveling to Haiti, Costa Rica, Morocco and China to visit partner schools and friends made through our International Emerging Leaders Conference while others are here on campus assisting Lower School teachers or interviewing our retiring teachers. Every experience will be rewarding in different ways -- for some students, they'll confirm that they'll pursue a particular vocation, and for others, they'll learn that a job they thought they might like isn't what they expected. First week comments from students....
Ali Moore (at MeadWestVaco): I go to a lot of meetings and talk about sustainability in both social and environmental aspects. I have my own desk, computer and email address I feel like an adult!
Drew Fulton (Henrico Doctors Hospital): My main job is to help the nurses by holding babies when they're being fussy. Most of the babies have respiratory problems and some have feeding tubes. So far, I've held infants ranging from 4 days to five months old. I love this project. The highlight of my day is when little Evan falls asleep on my chest or when 5 day-old Mason smiles and stops crying as I rock him. Though at times the infants are in desperate need of a change or stinky from spit up, their little sighs as they cuddle against me makes it all worth it.
Ansley Foster (Visual Arts Center): I've really enjoyed working at the vis arts center because I've gotten to see how everything and every person fits into such an extensive program. Everybody is so passionate about art and the people it serves. Although I only do small things like making flags and organizing closets, I can tell it is a huge help in the grand scheme of things.
