Students Return From Model UN in Mexico

Fourteen Upper School students and two teachers -- Kathy Vlieger and Tim Lengel -- recently returned from a Model UN event at our partner school, Carol Baur, in Mexico City. The following is a report from Dr. Vlieger...
On January 24, we departed to participate in the three-day Baur Interschool Model United Nations (BIMUN) in Querétaro, Mexico.  We joined 450 delegates from various Mexican states, as well as a delegation from Venice, Italy.  Our students prepared for weeks ahead of time, conducting research and writing position papers on topics for committees including UN Water, UN Food, DISEC, and SOCHUMCULT.  Each delegate represented the opinions and interests of a specific country or UN organization. Custis Coleman was one of three delegates out of 30 who won an award -- on his UN-Water committee, representing IWRA (International Water Resources Association) on topics "Water Deprivation" and "Water Eutrophication." In addition to the Carol Baur Directors, we were joined by the Governor of Querétaro, and two United Nations Directors from NYC.

Equally important was the cultural exchange, as our students were guests of Carol Baur families in both Querétaro and Mexico City.  Our students made new friends with both Mexican and Italian peers. Our visit was topped off with a trip to the Teotihuacán pyramids, where we climbed the Temples of the Sun and Moon, and learned about the complex history of this site.  This was, once again, a wonderful and enriching experience for Collegiate students and chaperones!

These students were on the trip: Juniors Ali Beaver, Custis Coleman Brian Davia, Mary Weston DeVoe, Ravenel Harrigan, Frances Mitchell, Grace Mountcastle; sophomores Jessica Nunn, Faith Reed; freshmen Bridget Ferguson, Aven Jones, Scott Werwath, Sarah Whitaker, C.J. Wittman
