Cub Wrestling 2003-2004: Match Synopsis Vs. St. Christopher’s Phew! The Cubs have wrestled three very tough matches in a row, and tonight was the most challenging yet. Hats off to varsity wrestler Johnny Clore, who left his practice early to act as a substitute referee until the second official arrived, and to Coach Sica, who again helped coach our grapplers after the varsity practice was over. Wrestling is an individual sport to be sure, but tonight’s match was a great example of why each individual effort is key to overall team victories. The night belonged to the Cougars when it was all said and done, but by such a slim margin (5 points) that every takedown, every escape, and every young man who fought off his back to stay alive in a losing effort made a difference. We must give credit to St. Christopher’s, as several of their wrestlers competed three times while only one of ours did, but when analyzing those third matches, the wins and losses come out exactly even. Coach Lawson and Coach Leipheimer are extremely proud of our team—in terms of outcomes, yes, but more importantly in terms of effort, enthusiasm, and improving skills. We do need to work on some specific areas as we look toward the rest of the season, and we have some time to catch our collective breath now before the next competition after the holiday. At this point, we continue to be pleased with each grappler’s improvement, and can’t wait for the second half of the season—we’ve certainly built up a full head of steam!
