Summer Camp Fun Continues

Summer Quest is winding down, with just two weeks of camp left....
By all accounts, the programs that have helped 1,323 campers perfect a skill, enjoy fun and games, and foster friendships have been a success.  “We received lots of comments from parents about the quality of the camps and that the kids were learning a lot,” says Summer Quest director Collin McConaghy. Summer Quest's 100-plus camps have focused on interests as varied as reading, math, lacrosse, basketball, scrapbooking, yoga, cooking and global studies.

Collegiate students also have embraced service learning opportunities - on and off campus. Through the JUMP Camp, a dozen rising 8th and 9th graders mentored elementary students from the Peter Paul Development Center for one week in  July. The camp offered an equal mix of fun activities and teachable moments, with our student leaders emphasizing the importance of values, such as respect, commitment, safety, and trust. “I learned that I get attached to people,” says rising 8th grader Lambsy Moorman. “I didn’t want to say goodbye. If I got to know them for one more week, I could love them like a brother or sister.”

A partnership with The Faison School for Autism wraps up next week. Since early July, Collegiate Upper School students have served as peer instructors with Faison students who are similar in age. Their one-to-one interaction has helped students from both schools deepen their perspectives and make new friends.

Groups of Middle and Upper School students also have traveled together this summer, with teachers and faculty leading excurisons to Nevada and to other countries, including Spain, France, Ghana and China.
