Led by the Bruising Bookends (Joe "I'm the Law"son and Seth "The Terminator" Lotts), the MatCats nearly caught the Mathews Moccasins in the wrestle-backs for the team title at the Christchurch Invitational, a 15 team tournament. The MatCats had to forfeit three weight classes, and were hurt by the absence of Jammin' Jamie, the #1 ranked 119'er, due to an injury. Lawson and Lotts both won gold medals by pinning all their opponents; Lotts's 1 minute job on HMA's formerly once-beaten Darren Mitchell was especially entertaining! The Terminator finished 3rd in the balloting for Most Outstanding Wrestler, an honor seldom given to any heavyweight, especially one who isn't on the mat long enough to be seen at any length by the coaches and fans. Joseph's gold medal was his first (but not last!) as a varsity wrestler; he was quite impressive. The Mac-attack continued as Dr. Friddell ran his record to 22-1, and earned another gold medal. Mac had 3 pins and a 13-6 decision over Mathew's Jason Kerns in the finals. Silver medals went to Whizzer Reed Blair and U.S. Marshall Waller, both 3-1 for the competition. Johnny Clore-ox white-washed 5 opponents on his way to the bronze medal. The clean-up man avenged a first round loss to Mathew's tough Lanny Laland, but pinning the snake-man in the consolation semi-finals. Clore blanked Academy's Anroso 8-0 for the medal. Other placers: Rust-proof Bartholomew, 5th at 135; Zach Jesse-james, 4th at 152; Joey "Howlin'" Wolf, 4th at 160 and Alan Miller, 5th at 171. Next home action: Jan. 23 against FUMA, 3:30 pm.
