Students Build Ramps on MLK Day

Last Monday, Martin Luther King Day, six Collegiate R.A.M.P.S. Club members braved wet and chilly conditions as they participated in a National Day of Service and built two wheelchair ramps for residents of Henrico County.
The R.A.M.P.S. Club (Ramp Access Made Possible by Students) was started by three members of the Class of '07, and it continues with its mission of providing this valuable service to those in need. According to Susan Revere, executive director of the non-profit R.A.M.P.S.,  "This group of builders worked quickly and efficiently as they assembled two wheelchair ramps  ... They truly set an excellent example for other area high school students, and improved the lives of our two ramp recipients." Participating were Upper School physics teacher Dr. David Headly, Michael Grappone, Steve Holt, Mark Hourigan, Burke Modisett, Connor Partlow and Tucker Wrenn.
"Both of our ramp recipients rely on scooters for mobility, and both of them were worried about getting out of their homes in case of fire," says Ms. Revere.  "They tell me they will use their ramps every day, based on my follow-up phone call to each of them.  Neighbors have stopped by to compliment them on their ramps, and Mr. Jeffers (our first ramp recipient) kept repeating, 'This ramp is beautiful - I love it' throughout our conversation.  He specifically asked me to tell the kids, 'Tell them all I say hello and THANK YOU!'
