US English Teacher Norman-Risch Receives Writing Awards

    Reflecting the strength of the Upper School English Department, English teacher Mil Norman-Risch has received two first place awards and an honorable mention in prestigious writing contests, and her work will be published in various journals in 2008. Norman-Risch teaches poetry and memoir in addition to other courses.
Here are the details of the writing contests and awards, as well as links to learn more:

Mil Norman-Risch won the 2007 American Poetry Journal's Poet's Prize ($500 award) judged by poet J.P. Dancing Bear.  The poem will appear this month (July 2008).

Additionally, Norman-Risch won First Prize in NMW's 2008 creative nonfiction contest.  It is believed that the issue comes out in September. AWP (The Association of Writers and Writing Programs) has announced the award on its website: See http://www.awpwriter.org/magazine/awpnews01.htm The category was New Millennium Writing Awards, earning $1,000 and Publication. Poetry Winner: Harry Bauld for “Alaska.” Nonfiction Winners: Ralph Ryan for “Wildfire, Hellfire” and M. Norman Risch for “The Day My Son Died.” Short-Short Fiction Winner: Susan Chiavelli for “Winter Oranges.”

Lastly, in 2008 six other literary journals are publishing Norman-Risch's poetry: White Pelican Review, Valparaiso Review (forthcoming in Sept), Avatar Review  (http://avatarreview.net/), Freshwater, Common Ground Review, and Northern Agrarian Monthly.  In past years, her work has appeared in Willow Springs, Sojourners, and in Agha Shahid Ali's anthology Ravishing DisUnities (Wesleyan 2001).
