Alums enjoyed morning and afternoon activities hosted by the School’s Alumni Office, including the dedication of the Jamie Robertson ‘04 Wrestling Room in Seal Athletic Center, tours led by the Admission Office, the 50th Reunion lunch for the Class of 1969, the opening of the Class of 1994’s time capsule and an art exhibition featuring the work of alums Hope Morgan ‘12 and Anna Morgan ‘15 in the South Science Building. Yesterday, the Legacy Society Reunion Brunch was held on campus for graduates from the Classes of 1915-1968, and more than 300 alums gathered for the 36th Annual Oyster Roast, where Missy McGurn Chiles ‘03 and her band Exebelle performed.
Becky Jones ‘69, the daughter of Collegiate legendary coach and teacher Grover Jones, and former Girls School receptionist Anne Jones, was thrilled to be back on campus attending her 50th Reunion.
“I have friends coming in from out of state and it will be great to catch up,” she said.
Collegiate alum Sarah Paxton ‘84 said she was excited to see what old friends were up to.
“Even though we keep up on social media, it’s fun to catch up in person,” Sarah said. “We have these shared memories, and we come back and have some laughs. It’s very special.”
At 1 p.m., alums joined several hundred current Cougars and Collegiate friends who filled the stands of Grover Jones Field for the big game.
The Norfolk Academy Bulldogs scored first to take a 7-0 lead, but Collegiate quickly tied the game with a touchdown pass from quarterback Owen Fallon to tight end Trey Boll. By the end of the first half, the Cougars stretched the lead to 21-7. At halftime, senior players and their parents took the field to be recognized, followed by the 2019 Homecoming Court, to loud cheers from the enthusiastic crowd.
Shreya Sharma was named this year’s Homecoming Queen. (Homecoming King Austin King was announced during Friday’s Homecoming Pep Rally.) Other members of the Homecoming Court this year were: Maggie Bostain, Gracie Clark, Lilly Hall, Cate Hill, Addison Smith, Joseph Ascoli, Trey Boll, Thomas Lucy, Edward Sinnott and Nigel Williams. They congratulated the Class King and Queen before leaving the field in time for the game to resume.
In the second half, a field goal by kicker Bo Brown, an interception by defensive back Hunter Milligan and a rushing touchdown by running back Donald Adams helped to seal the 31-7 win.
It was a memorable day made all the more special because of the connections made.
“Homecoming is great because alumni come back and tell the stories of our Collegiate experience,” said Scott Ruth ‘91. “That is a time we’ll always have. It’s about the relationships we have created.”
