Development Office Hosts Book Signing for Alex Smith ‘65

The Collegiate School Development Office will host a book signing on Monday, Dec. 10, to celebrate a publication penned by Alex Smith ‘65, who spent 47 years as a Collegiate faculty member and development staff member, securing major gifts for the School.
The book is called Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Lessons Learned By a Lifelong Fundraiser. Along with detailing Mr. Smith’s experiences, it features illustrations by Steve Kelley ‘77. Proceeds from books sold during the event will benefit Collegiate School.

Mr. Smith spent more than 40 years working to foster the strong, loyal Collegiate community. His natural way with people and attention to detail served him well throughout his career. In the newly released book, he has partnered with fellow alum and renowned cartoonist Mr. Kelley to share his expertise and highlights from his memorable journey.

The collaboration between the two worked well, said Mr. Kelley, and providing humorous illustrations to accompany Mr. Smith’s anecdotes was not difficult.

“It was actually a lot easier than I anticipated, as Alex has always had a sense for highlighting whatever is amusing in the world around him,” he said. “So the text he gave me was full of these experiences that were frankly, hilarious.”

Mr. Smith credits the idea to write the book to Bill Goodwin, his longtime friend and a Collegiate past parent, current grandparent and past Chairman of the Collegiate Board of Trustees.

“He suggested that I write a book based on my fundraising experience to share with others in the profession, especially newcomers,” Mr. Smith said. “So, the sole purpose of the book is to help others. That purpose became my motivation.”

All alumni and friends of Collegiate are invited to join Mr. Smith and Mr. Kelley for the book signing from 12:30-3:30 p.m. in the Collegiate School Development Office. Books may be purchased for $29.95 and can be paid for with a credit card. Current parents can charge to their student's account.
