Collegiate Hosts Daylong Music Workshop

Collegiate School served as host to instrumentalists from 11 high schools across the state for a daylong workshop during which students had the opportunity to work with a diverse group of internationally acclaimed performers, composers and teachers.
The student-musicians, who were recommended by their music teachers to attend, worked together in small groups and as a large ensemble to explore jazz standards, original works and free and conceptually based improvisations. Each of the groups gave a performance to conclude the workshop.

The workshop, funded by the Oates Endowment for the Arts and organized by Collegiate’s band leader Bryan Hooten, featured top-notch instruction from some of the Richmond’s well-known jazz musicians: Taylor Barnett (brass/combo), Devonne Harris (rhythm section/combo), Suzi Fischer (woodwinds/combo) and Doug Richards (big band).

Collegiate’s Director of Performing Arts Mike Boyd proclaimed the event a huge success.

“Students and parents alike were extremely grateful as this is a one-of-a-kind opportunity where students did not have to compete and could learn side by side from the best in the field of jazz music,” he said.
