Missy Herod

40 years

About two weeks ago, Missy came up to me in McFall Hall, sat down at the table I was at and looked me straight in the eyes and said, “You’re going to hate me”. I proceeded to look a little concerned and replied, “Are you dumping graduation on me”. She quickly responded, “something worse”. I took a deep breath, paused and with much hesitation said, “you’re not making me teach sex ed are you”. She then popped the question…”will you speak on my behalf at the retirement reception”. I immediately felt a large pit in my stomach, fought back the immediate need to cry and accepted with great honor. I went home that night and cried like a baby to my husband because….this meant…it really is happening.

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I’d have someone who is 32 years older than me who I consider a best friend. I’m still a little in denial that Missy is retiring and her time here at Collegiate in all official capacities is coming to an end.  So much so that I’m still pretty confident I can convince her to stay just one more year.

If you haven’t had a chance to read Coach Bradshaw’s Reflections piece on Missy, I strongly encourage you to do so. There is no way I’d be able to cover the amount of impact she has had on this school and it’s community in 300 words or less.  Missy Herod is legendary. She has done it all. I am so fortunate to have worked hand and hand with her for the past 6 years. Not only has Missy taught countless Collegiate students in the past 40 years, she’s taught me so much. She’s taught me when to speak up, when to sit back and listen and when to be the voice of reason in a room. She’s taught me, the behind the scenes details are what make a program successful and to leave the limelight for those who want it and may need it.

Missy….I hope you keep your cell on you next year because I will be phoning a friend, often. Congratulations on your retirement.
