Global Engagement in the Middle School

On-Campus Initiatives Include

  • Guest speakers from around the world, visit in person and virtually. For example, Chief Joseph Tipanko, a Maasai Chief and community leader, visits the Middle School every year to teach students about Maasai traditions and his struggle to bring development to his community whilst preserving their culture.
  • Mandarin Chinese language students create a celebratory program for the Chinese Year for the whole community, sharing their knowledge and appreciation for this important event in the Chinese calendar.
  • World Religions Assemblies are a feature of the Middle School assembly program that brings speakers and stories from the world's five major religions to the students in an educational way.
  • Through a Service Learning curriculum, 5th Grade history classes connect their study of ancient cultures to modern day concerns both locally and globally, enhancing the understanding of the permanence and necessity of clean water, water scarcity, and the role water plays in the development of each of the cultures studied.
  • The history curriculum in 6th grade is also globally focused, and involves in-depth culture studies through literature and film, connecting history with today’s world.
  • Middle School Model UN is a growing activity for 7th and 8th grade students, engaging them with international visitors as well as local Model UN conferences.

Partner School Exchanges Include

  • Every year for the month of February, 8th grade students from our partner school, Saint-Denis International School in Loches, France, live with Collegiate families and attended school. In March, a group of Collegiate 8th Graders studying French language return to France with the exchange students. Their trip focuses on language immersion through living with host families and participating in school activities.
  • Every year, Spanish language students host students from the Carol Baur School located in Mexico City. The six-day visit includes classroom visits, presentations about Mexico, museum excursions, and a day trip to Williamsburg. The goals of this exchange are to create cultural awareness, heighten language skills and form relationships across borders.

  • China

    Collegiate's first partnership in China was created in 2006 with Changzhou Senior High School, an elite public school in the city of Changzhou in Jiangsu Province. Collegiate formed a second partnership in 2007 with a private school in the city of Yangzhou, also in Jiangsu Province: Beijing New Oriental Foreign Language School of Yangzhou.

    In 2007, Collegiate began its partnerships with India by forming relationships with the Modern School in New Delhi.

  • Mexico

    In the summer of 2006, a Collegiate faculty member went to a technology conference at Colegio Carol Baur, located in Mexico City, Mexico, a private school serving students from 2 years of age through high school. A group from Carol Baur came to Collegiate in Spring 2007, and a group from Collegiate went to Carol Baur in January 2008, where a formal exchange program (intercambio) was established between the two schools.
