Collegiate Athletic Director Named to VISAA Hall of Fame

Collegiate School Athletic Director Karen Doxey has been elected to the 2018 Class of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Hall of Fame. She, along with four other individuals, will be honored at the Hall of Fame Banquet on April 30.
Mrs. Doxey’s coaching and athletic leadership career in Virginia spans nearly 40 years. She started her career at Norfolk Academy before coming to Collegiate in 1987 to teach health and physical education and coach varsity field hockey and lacrosse. She was head coach of both sports for more than a decade before shifting her focus solely to field hockey.

Mrs. Doxey was named Collegiate’s Associate Athletic Director in 1990 and began serving as Co-Athletic Director in 1999 — a position she held until being named Athletic Director in July 2013.

In the 39 years she has coached field hockey, Mrs. Doxey has compiled  a 597-157-37 record. She ranks No. 3 in the National Federation of State High School Associations for most wins by a high school field hockey coach. Along the way, her field hockey teams have captured 18 League of Independent School (LIS) titles and eight VISAA state championships. In lacrosse, Mrs. Doxey compiled an overall record of 140-53-5, capturing three LIS titles. She has received multiple Coach of the Year awards.

During that time, she also has supported the efforts of VISAA in tremendous ways, including through her current serviceon the VISAA Field Hockey Committee (1998-present; 1998-2003, chair) and the VISAA Lacrosse Committee (2006-present). She served as the Regional Representative for the VISAA Executive Committee from 1997-2012 and has been a leader in promoting and hosting VISAA events. Under her direction, Collegiate also has served as the neutral site for many VISAA events, including field hockey (2008, 2009), girls’ lacrosse (2013, 2014), boys’ tennis (2010-present) and boys’ lacrosse (2009).

Even more impressive than her VISAA leadership and coaching credentials are the thousands of young people's lives that Mrs. Doxey has impacted, says Collegiate Head of School Steve Hickman.

“Her longevity and success are a direct result of her great passion for young people and their personal development, and her immeasurable capacity for positively influencing and shaping their lives,” he said. “Her integrity is above reproach and her moral compass serves as a model for all who know her. I cannot imagine anyone more qualified or deserving of this honor than Mrs. Doxey. She represents the best of what our state association stands for and fully embodies the high standards established for Hall of Fame recognition.”

Mrs. Doxey said it’s an honor to be recognized by her peers and also to have an opportunity to coach such wonderful young athletes.

“Along the way, the kids have taught me,” she said. “I’ve had so many kids that have gone on and done really well as people, as captains of their teams in college and in their professions. What has been so rewarding has been seeing them do so well.”
