Upper School Students Honor Black History Month

Eleven Upper School students from United Sisters and Brothers, one of Collegiate School’s student resource groups, visited the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., in February.

The museum visit, sponsored by Mosaic, an inclusion club, proved to be the perfect field trip to mark Black History Month.

This nearly 400,000-square-feet Smithsonian museum houses artifacts, images and memorabilia from all eras of African American history and continues to draw crowds from around the nation and world since opening in 2016. Collegiate’s student group secured some of the coveted museum passes, which is the only way entry is permitted at this time.

“It was astounding to realize the impact that African Americans have had on popular things we all know and love today,” said 11th Grader Chandler Pettus.

Chandler shared his thoughts in an article that reflected on the museum experience, Students Journey Through African American HIstory, in The Match, Collegiate’s student-run online news site.
