Senior Capstone Students Visit Virginia International Gateway

Collegiate School students enrolled in the Senior Capstone Class International Emerging Leaders ‒ Asia visited the Virginia International Gateway (VIG), the largest privately owned container terminal in the United States located along the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth, Virginia

With 15 weekly vessel calls to and from Asia and two-thirds of the U.S. population within a day's drive, VIG’s global reach and impact on economic development directly relates to the topics of the Capstone course. (Read more about VIG here.)

Students met Tom Capozzi, Chief Commercial Officer; Greg Edwards, Director, Internal and Partner Communications; and Rebecca Killen, Innovation Coordinator, who explained in detail the many operational challenges of running one of the only functional automated container terminals in the Western Hemisphere.

The tour of the terminal enhanced students’ understanding of global supply chains and prepared them for their upcoming visits in March to the Richmond and Shanghai offices of WestRock, the Richmond-based company, and a tour of a toothbrush factory in Yangzhou, China, where they will witness international trade and global supply chains in action.

The Capstone course International Emerging Leaders ‒ Asia examines the economic ties between the U.S. and China, exploring political, cultural and ethical issues related to economics. The course includes an exchange with Collegiate’s partner school, Beijing New Oriental Foreign Language School in Yangzhou, China, from March 16-24. The students’ studies and visit to China will be complemented by homestays with their Chinese student peers.
