Kindergartners Explore Art Around the World

In keeping with the Collegiate School's yearlong Kindergarten theme, Alike and Different, every class will visit the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to see the various materials used to produce art in countries including China, Italy and many in Africa. Lower School art teacher Holly Smith is leading the tours with the students.
The students begin with viewing Romare Bearden's iconic Three Folk Musicians, sample some mid-century art and ogle sparkling Faberge works. They move on to view the masks in the VMFA's African collection. This is the highlight of the trip, after seeing images in the art classroom and creating their own African-like masks. They also observe a medieval tapestry and ancient Chinese artifacts before engaging in plenty of hands-on activities in the museum's kid-friendly "Dig It" room.
