First Graders Research the Potential of Repurposed Buildings

As part of a Collegiate 1st Grade social studies unit Richmond Then and Now, students visited the defunct hydroelectric power plant on Belle Isle for research and discovery.
The 1st Graders demonstrated their findings by creating a prototype building depicting ways to repurpose the plant. Using a variety of recycled materials, the creative ideas ran the gamut from a bike shop to an animal rescue center to a recreation and fitness center to a community learning center.

Students gave careful thought to the structure, style and function of their buildings, which they shared in presentations to their 5th Grade “Bridge Buddies” and several other members of the Collegiate community.
