Summer Offers Students Multiple Travel Experiences

School may be out, but Collegiate School students are busy traveling the state, nation and the globe to get the most out of their summer.

Here’s a roundup of the exciting trips underway and coming up:

Dungannon, Virginia

About 20 rising 8th Graders are participating in the School’s annual visit to this small city in the southeastern part of the state from June 11-17, to provide needed services to its Appalachian residents, such as painting, help with yard work and with odd jobs. This is the 11th year students have had this service project opportunity.

Yellowstone/Grand Teton

Thirty rising 9th Graders are exploring Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park in the wild West with faculty member guides from June 10-18. The trip is based around geology and biological interaction, adventure and environmental preservation.

Nicaragua

A group of 13 rising seniors are volunteering withLos Quinchos, a home for children, from June 11-19. The students are building relationships with the children and listening to their stories. The goal of the trip is to gain a new perspective and learn from one another.

Upcoming summer trips include:

Costa Rica

Students will explore the rainforest with Upper School faculty members Sandra Marr and Helen Markiewicz while also garnering ½ science credit. From June 14-22, students will visit various places and topographies including the mountains of Monteverde, La Selva Biological Station, the island of Tortuguero and Guanacaste. They will participate in hands-on field work and observation. When they return to school, they will take trips in Virginia to do comparison field work.

China

Collegiate’s Director of Responsible Citizenship Clare Sisisky and Lower School faculty member Rives Barksdale will lead Chinese language students on a nearly two-week tour of China for intensive language experience from June 19-30.

South Africa

From July 7-18, seven Collegiate rising seniors and juniors will participate in a high school leadership conference that draws students from throughout South Africa and neighboring countries to discuss and dissect social justice issues. The conference theme is Greed vs. Sustainability. Collegiate has historically been the only American school to participate.
