Students from Partner School in Mexico Visit Collegiate

Collegiate School welcomed 18 students from our partner school in Mexico this week to experience life with a Collegiate family and their 6th-8th Grade hosts.
While at Collegiate, the students from Colegio Carol Baur have performed a traditional dance, the Chiapas, for the Lower School, are shadowing their Middle School hosts, and will give a presentation during a Middle School Assembly on Friday. They will also tour Richmond and visit Williamsburg for a day before departing on Saturday, May 6.

The partnership with Carol Baur, now in its 10th year, offers students a chance to learn many life lessons, says Middle School Spanish teacher Debbie Hailes, who helped facilitate the students’ visit.

“All students have the opportunity to learn about different cultures, strengthen their language skills, both English and Spanish, and expand their global awareness,” she said. “Collegiate students will not only be able to practice their Spanish, but will put in action their skills as responsible citizens by showing compassion, empathy and good manners to our North American neighbors.”

Students gain this broader perspective without having to leave home, says Daniela Guzman, a Collegiate Middle School Spanish teacher, who partners with Mrs. Hailes in organizing the weeklong visit.

“In addition, this hosting experience will hopefully be the start of lifelong relationships for families from both schools," she said.
