Librarians Lead Session on News and Information

Lower School and Middle School librarians Allison Williams and Carolyn LaMontagne worked with 4th, 5th and 6th Graders to discuss “Where Do We Get Our News and Information?”
Students learned how to choose information sources carefully, how to consider a range of viewpoints and how to ask the right questions to uncover bias including: What does an editor do?; What is censorship?; What does “undermined public faith” mean?; What is an anonymous source?; and What does it mean to be “unaccountable?"

Topics of discussion included the dangers of misinformation, thinking before sharing stories and recognizing sensationalism to become more information literate.

“Students were fascinated and felt empowered to have tools to outsmart the tricksters,” Ms. Williams said.
