Upper School Jazz Band Performs at Generation Dream 2017

The Collegiate Upper School Jazz Band performed during the Richmond Peace Education Center’s annual Generation Dream concert on Wednesday at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in the city. Generation Dream 2017 is part of an “edu-concert” series held during Black History Month to honor of Dr. King. It features dozens of talented youth from the Richmond metro area.

The production showcases the cultural diversity of our region and featured original works by several teen leaders active in the Richmond Youth Peace Project. In addition to the Upper School Jazz Band, performing arts ensembles included the a capella group Off the Cuff and dance ensembles from Binford Middle School, John Marshall High School and the University of Richmond.

Among this year’s other performers were the Taaluma Youth Performance Company, Nena Daniels and Dance Interface from the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School, as well as classical Indian dance groups.

“It was an honor to perform with such an inspiringly expressive and diverse group of local youth,” said Bryan Hooten, Collegiate's Middle and Upper School Band Director.

The Collegiate jazz band performance included a reading of Dr. King's remarks for the 1964 Berlin Jazz Festival by band members Zach Bostic, Destana Herring and Shaan Sharma, as well as Stolen Moments by Oliver Nelson and Two Degrees East, Three Degrees West by John Lewis, arranged by Mr. Hooten.
